Subs

Subs will restart on 2nd August. Non-members will again be welcome on all normal club runs from this time, paying higher subs than members. Coached sessions will be reserved for club members only.

There are no changes to the price of runs compared to pre-COVID-19, being £1 per run for a member and £2 per run for a non-member, however we are moving towards a cashless system, with subs being paid into the following bank account:

As this is a new system the Management Group would prefer that subs are paid per run, with your name

as the reference e.g. "L TAYLOR" so the account can be monitored against attendance at runs.

London Marathon Ballot

This year we received one club place for the London Marathon - there were 13 entrants up for selection. The draw was conducted by our Club Secretary John and Captain Darren.

All names were placed into a cup and all entrants were invited to witness the draw.

The winner of the ballot was Tony Pratt. Congratulations from all the committee.

Thunder Run 24 hour

Hi Fellow Member.

You may or may not have heard about the 24 hour running events that Marple Runners have been entering teams into for the last few years. I apologise to the many members that have enjoyed these events in the past, but for those who haven’t- let me explain.

There are a couple of these events that we have (pre lockdown) regularly entered with up to 4 teams . These 24 Hour - 10k Relay running events are Thunder Run in July and Equinox in September each year.

I like to describe these events as Glastonbury for runners.

These events are a 24 hour race/run consisting of 10k laps - Off Road – run as a relay event by teams of up to eight runners (We have had a few very brave members who have entered as Solo runners in the past – but not this year)

Participants and their significant others, family and even dogs, camp – or stay in campervans, Motor Homes or Caravans - on site from Friday to Sunday. The 24 Hour event starts at Midday on Saturday, finishing at Midday on Sunday – Friday night becomes a bit of a social gathering (rules allowing), depending on how seriously your team is taking the event.

I am organising our entry into Thunder Run 2021 which is taking place between 23rd and 25th July this year at Caton Park, Walton-on-Trent, DE12 8LN

This year it is my intention to make it more about getting club members together for more of a social event with some running thrown in - We have two teams of eight entered – carried over from last year’s event that unfortunately was cancelled.

In the past we have ranked all team members so that all teams are evenly matched in terms of time, resulting in most of us doing three 10k laps in the 24 hours of the event. This year we are doing it differently – we will have one team of those who are up for running up to three laps each in the 24 hours, and another for those who haven’t been running so much recently who can run/walk whatever they feel able to achieve, be it one lap or three. The message is there is no pressure – its about the club getting together. If you don’t want to run in the hours of darkness you don’t have to – It's up to each of us to do whatever we are comfortable doing.

I am sure there are plenty of members who have attended these events in the last few years that will tell you how much fun they are.

We have three spaces available as some of those who entered last year are now unable to make it this year.

If you are up for a great fun but challenging weekend please let me know as soon as you can that you would like to join us.

The cost is £65 per runner – that includes entry to the run, a T-Shirt, a medal and camping for the weekend for you and the rest of your family/ partners / dogs etc..

This will be on a first come - first served basis, so if you are up for it please email me - I will answer any questions that you have. The first three to pay will be members of the Marple Menacers (that’s what we call ourselves when on tour).

This is the link to the web site – have a look at the photos and videos clips of previous events – they will give you an idea of what it is all about:

https://www.continental-tyres.co.uk/car/about-us/sponsoring-and-partnerships/continental-thunder-run-24hr

These events have probably done more than any other events to allow fellow members to get to know each other and develop the social side of the club.

If you are interested and sign up I will be sending out more detailed information about the event in the next few weeks.

I look forward to seeing you at this fantastic event in July.

Kind Regards

Ade Thomas

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE

Dear Marple Runners.

I’m sure you are all wondering when we are going to get out racing for real again.

In the light of ever changing restrictions we have been working hard behind the scenes to put together a timetable for a wide range of events for the remainder of the Club Championship season.

Assuming parkrun comes back on June 5th, as they have announced, our first event will be Marple parkrun for all of June (best time to count).

We are hoping all other restrictions will be lifted after June 21st and the list of our championship races can be found here.

Of course, these races may be subject to cancellation or restricted entry, in which case we will review their inclusion in the championship as we want an even playing field for all.

Thank you for all your support and here's to a great finish to 2021.

Many thanks

Tony

Hello All,

After careful consideration the Marple Runners Management group have discussed the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation and made the difficult decision around the following forthcoming club activities.

Weekly Monday and Wednesday Club Runs will, for now continue. Although, in this rapidly changing environment anything can happen so please keep an eye out on social media. As with the advice everywhere, if you have symptoms described stay away. And if you feel that you are in higher risk group then please, carefully consider your attendance.

Pub 2 parkrun

We are going to postpone this until everything is back to normal. It is a bi-weekly, 9 week series of sessions and could be impacted by participants and leaders themselves contracting the virus or being unwilling to participate over that period of time and not being able to complete the programme. Everyone signed up will be deferred to the later date.

Time Trial Race on April 8th

We are going to cancel this.

AGM on March 30th

It is doubtful that this will take place. Whilst we only need 16 people to be there, there could be key people not able to make it through self-isolation for them, family members or vulnerable. In addition that we may not get a meaningful representation of the club. I will let everyone know nearer the time.

There is an EA Club run (date to be decided) planned but we will not do that.

Having said all that I am acutely aware that running and the social nature of our club is very important to us all from a physical and mental health aspect. I would encourage you to run together in small groups providing you are not ill and not vulnerable. I would ask that you arrange privately to do this and not use our Facebook group.

This is an extremely challenging situation for the whole world and the health and safety of everyone is our top priority. The next few months are going to be hard for us, but we can support each other and I look forward to the time when we can all get out there again.

I will also email this to all members.

If anyone has any questions then you can message me or email me at it@marplerunners.com.

Thank you all for you support on behalf of the Marple Runners Management Group.

James
